When the fragment struck in 2202, the Remnants were lucky enough to survive the strike on the surface, but they took the heaviest hit from the nuclear and biological contamination that accompanied the strike. They began, like most surface survivors, living for decades off the largesse of the past, salvaging food and goods when needed. As time passed small groups coalesced and they established farms and ranches to feed their families and to trade with each other.

Typically peaceful, their agrarian life is propped up using recovered pre-fragment machinery. Their level of technological achievement is low, but they are able mechanics and canny salvagers and can often be found around the ruins of the lightly contaminated pre-fragment cities and suburbs. The Remnants, like the Soldati, have experienced mutations due to the biological and nuclear contamination that polluted the Earth post-fragment.

They have no real inter-tribe communication and enjoy an uneasy peace with the Soldati, who act as trading partners. The Soldati also act as their slightly extortative protectors from the mutated surface life. In the early 23rd century, Rumors about the VCA circulated slowly among the Remnants, bringing into question the validity of their beliefs that they are the ones destined to repopulate and recivilize the Earth and nurture her back to health.

Some embraced the new ways of the VCA, equipping themselves and their family members with implants and using the teleportation system, but others have chosen to continue their life of austerity, determined to inherit the Earth without the technological baggage of the old ways.
